Kamilari, the village

The authentic village of Kamilári (Καμηλάρι), which currently has about 400 inhabitants, is located in the south of Crete.

The fertile valley of the Messara has been inhabited for thousands of years. The first mention of this village in the Venetian archives dates back to 1370.

The name of the village is said to derive from the Byzantine word "Kamilaris" (camel driver).

Many old houses have been renovated while preserving the old architectural style. In the centre of the village is the old fountain dating back to 1929.

You can stroll through the old little streets of Kamilári and discover interesting little shops, fantastic restaurants and small Cafés.

Visitors being generally independent travellers, the village has retained its original rural character.

800 m from Villa Zefyros, the village can be reached on foot or by car.

The centre of Kamilári has been restored and has a relaxed and authentic atmosphere. This is where you can meet the friendly locals.

The annual village festival takes place in the heart of summer.

In Kamilári you will find a supermarket for your daily shopping, a bakery, a pharmacy, excellent Greek taverns (restaurants), a well-known pizzeria and several welcoming kafenions.

An automated banking machine (ATM) operates in season.
